For Your Eyes, For Your Skin: The Surprising Benefits of Carotenoids and Antioxidants

How lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene support both your eyes and your skin.

In earlier articles, we explored the connections between skin health and eye health: how their ageing is driven by some shared biochemical processes, especially oxidative stress and glycation, and how certain nutrients are beneficial not only for the eye but also for the skin.

We also touched on the work behind seeing in the age of increasing screen time: the continuous energy production, light-sensitive cells, and protective systems needed to combat oxidative stress.

Visor™ offers a way to build on your daily eye nutrition.

Like a Shield for Your Eyes

Long hours at a screen, reading, and driving after dark can make us more aware of the demands we place on our eyes. Beneath those everyday experiences, the retina is continually converting light into electrical signals. Its photoreceptors contain lipid-rich membranes that are particularly susceptible to oxidation, making antioxidant defence an important part of their biology.

Visor brings a different nutrient emphasis to a Clearer routine, with vitamin E, vitamin B2, bilberry extracts, and beta-carotene, alongside additional lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamin C.

Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulate in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. They form part of its yellow pigment, which absorbs short-wavelength visible light, and have antioxidant roles. Visor supplies 12 mg of lutein and 1 mg of zeaxanthin from marigold extract per capsule.¹

Vitamins E and C work in complementary environments. Fat-soluble vitamin E helps interrupt the chain reactions of lipid oxidation, while vitamin C helps regenerate vitamin E after its antioxidant action. Visor provides 20 mg of vitamin E and 80 mg of vitamin C.²

Vitamin B2 supports normal vision and supplies the building blocks for FMN and FAD, cofactors used in cellular energy production and antioxidant enzyme systems. Beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A, which is essential for the visual pigments involved in seeing, including in dim light. Each capsule contains 1.4 mg of B2 and 4.8 mg of beta-carotene.³,⁴

Nourished Eyes, Glowing Skin

Your eyes and skin share a need for antioxidant defence. Lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene are also found in skin, where carotenoids help quench reactive molecules generated by environmental exposure.

Human research has explored whether oral carotenoids can support the skin’s response to UV. In a randomised trial with 12-week treatment periods, a lutein supplement reduced UV-induced molecular markers associated with oxidative stress and collagen breakdown.⁵

Vitamin C contributes to this picture through its role in normal collagen formation. Vitamins C and E help protect cells from oxidative stress, while vitamin A, which the body can make from beta-carotene, supports normal skin.²,⁴ Nutritional support complements sunscreen, shade, and sun-protective clothing; it doesn’t replace them.

There may be a visible benefit for your complexion, too. Apart from strengthening the skin’s antioxidant defence, the tiny red-orange pigments of carotenoids are also deposited in skin, which give it a warm glow. In a small, 12-week, placebo-controlled trial, people taking 10 mg of lutein and 2 mg of zeaxanthin isomers daily reported greater improvements in overall skin tone than those taking placebo.⁶ A separate study in men found that beta-carotene supplementation changed facial colour in ways observers rated as more attractive and healthier-looking.⁷

Visor makes this a simple daily addition: one plant-based capsule, preferably after a meal, with organic brown rice flour and bamboo silica as excipients instead of artificial fillers. Taking carotenoids with a meal containing some fat supports their absorption.

Visor™ contains beta-carotene and is not suitable for people who smoke or have had heavy occupational asbestos exposure. Check your total intake from other supplements.
